The crystal (piezo) spearker inside the boxes emit sound as well as functioning as a microphone, tuning capacitor and feedback input. .

schematic: the collector emmitter of a pnp transistor connect to a cmos inverter, the base has a cap and resitor in parralel to ground. another inverter is used as modulator, it sparks a red diode which drops the voltage level. it has photocells for frequency control. the output goes through a diode and rings the piezo through the transistor. output can be taken from the collector of the npn trasistor.
